O’Mahony succeeded Doug Howlett as captain for the start of the 2013/14 season, and new Munster boss Erasmus has backed the 26-year-old to lead the province once again in 2016/17.
The 26-year-old back row missed the entire provincial campaign last season, with CJ Stander filling in as captain.

O’Mahony may be absent for the beginning of the upcoming season as he continues to rehabilitate the knee injury he suffered at last year’s World Cup, but he is expected to return to action at some point in September.
In a statement this morning, Munster said Erasmus’ decision to appoint O’Mahony as captain was met with “the full support of the squad.”
