Speaking on RMC, Claude Puel was asked about rumours linking him to the AS Monaco job.
“No, but I don’t want to talk about Monaco. This is a club that has begun its league campaign, there is already a manager who is in place. Out of respect for the club and for the manager, I will not speak about hypotheses. It is not news… I have been close to coming back to Monaco twice already, it was close, I didn’t return, because I felt like I was going round in circles, to have done everything in my career and then be coming back to where I started, almost like an end point. So I refused. But one day I could of course come back to Monaco, it is the club where I was developed as a player. I had a very bad experience during my time at Lyon, because I did a final match at Monaco, we needed to win there to ensure Champions’ League qualification in my final year at Lyon, and for that we needed to win at Monaco. And I knew that if we did that, then Monaco would be relegated to Ligue 2. So we won at Monaco, I was happy for Lyon, for the team, because it was the club I was managing, my players. But I was very sad for my former club. And that really hurt me at the time.”
