Saint John’s wrestling travels west for dual at Division II Northern State at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in Aberdeen, S.D.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John’s opened its 2019-20 season with three on the podium last Saturday (Nov. 2) at the Wisconsin-Stevens Point Open.

Sophomore Jacob Scherber (Buffalo, Minn.), fresh off his team-leading 27 wins as a freshman last season, went 4-1 at 174 pounds to take third. He received an opening-round bye and dropped his first match of the tournament via fall, but bounced back with vengeance, three consecutive pins, and defeated Chance Benadum of Central (Iowa) 8-5 in the third-place match.

Senior Dominic Skawiniak (Rogers, Minn.) and freshman Lincoln Shinn (Willmar, Minn.) claimed fifth place at 197 and 184 pounds, respectively. Both wrestlers recorded three pins on the day.

A LOOK AT THE WOLVES: Northern State was picked sixth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate preseason coaches’ poll after posting a 6-5 (3-5 NSIC) dual record last season. Eighteen wrestlers return from last year’s team, eight of which were starters. Sophomores Kolton Roth (141 pounds) and Caden Moore (149) both spent time ranked nationally by the NWCA, while the team landed at No. 25 twice. The Wolves ripped apart their 2019-20 season opener, last Saturday’s (Nov. 2) Jamestown (N.D.) Open, with 13 placing in the top five. Two wrestlers claimed fifth, four fourth, three third, one second and three won titles: sophomore Dayne Morton (133 pounds), freshman James Burks (165) and junior Marcus Placide (184).

LAST YEAR: SJU suffered a 22-15 loss to then-No. 25 (Division II) Northern State on Jan. 18 (2019) in Collegeville. The Johnnies jumped out to a 9-0 lead thanks to a forfeit at 125 pounds and an 11-4 win from senior Noah Becker (Browerville, Minn.), his 20th of the season (20-2 record), at 133. The Wolves, however, answered with four straight wins, including three by three points or less, to claim a 13-9 lead.

Scherber stopped the bleeding with a 5-3 victory at 174 pounds, his team-leading 21st win of the season. Luke Dodd ’19 brought the Johnnies to within one point (16-15) with a nail-biting 5-4 decision at 197 pounds. He broke a 3-3 tie on a takedown in the closing seconds to improve to 10-3 on the year.

Senior Quincy Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) nearly gave SJU the dual win by pinning his opponent with a takedown and four-point near fall in the second period, and was ahead 8-6 but suffered a loss via fall with 1:10 remaining in the heavyweight match.
