Speaking in a press conference ahead of France’s World Cup opener against Australia on Tuesday, AS Monaco defender Axel Disasi (24) says that he regrets comments made immediately after the club’s 3-2 defeat to Marseille.
Monaco conceded a 98th-minute goal against their Mediterranean rivals on the final gameweek before the World Cup break. The goal came from a Dimitri Payet free-kick when replays showed minimal contact. Seconds earlier, Breel Embolo was tackled to the ground, but the decision went Marseille’s way and the Swiss international forward was given a yellow card.

Those decisions prompted Disasi to criticise the referee’s performance post-match, saying that the referee was “for Marseille” in the final minutes of the match.
Just hours after those comments, Disasi was called up to the France squad after it was revealed that Presnel Kimpembe wasn’t fit enough to feature in the tournament. Now in Qatar with his international teammates, Disasi reflected on those comments.
“Being calmer, these were comments that I shouldn’t have made toward the refereeing body. I should never had made such searing remarks, it’s an episode that serves as an example for the future,” said Disasi in a press conference, transcribed by L’Équipe.
