Firmino and Sturridge can start together, says Klopp

The Englishman started ahead of the Brazilian in the Reds’ 3-2 win against Paris Saint-Germain, with both finding the back of the net

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp thinks that the pairing of Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge have the skill to be able to play alongside each other for the Reds this season.

The latter started in place of the former for the club’s 3-2 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the opening week of the Champions League following the Brazilian’s eye injury sustained against Tottenham,

Sturridge laid out his credentials for a regular place in the first-choice XI as he opened the scoring, but Firmino once again proved his worth with a late cameo from the bench to score the winner.

Klopp confirmed that Firmino would be fit to start against Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday, but admitted that he could not rule out utilising both strikers up front alongside Mo Salah.

“He is ready,” the German confirmed at his pre-match presser. “So far there is no reason to think about Bobby, it’s about thinking about how can we line up in general differently.

“It’s just positive the impact Daniel had [against PSG]. It was an intense game, it was a fantastic game by him, to be honest, so that’s the best news and so now we know more about that.

“Could they play together? Yes, of course.”

Klopp further added that Sturridge’s electrifying showing against the Ligue 1 outfit strengthened his case for regular inclusion in what is likely to be a long, gruelling season as the Reds pursue both domestic and European glory.

“A lot of games will come, so it’s good to know about that,” the 51-year-old added. “that’s why I was so pleased with the performance, because it could be players say ‘now I play but I don’t have the rhythm’, but he had minutes before that and a lot of good sessions, so he had rhythm and played really well.

“That’s good and how I said there are a lot of games to come and these two boys can play together as well – they did in the past, by the way, and they can do it again.”

Following their clash with Southampton, Liverpool face back-to-back games against fellow early pacesetters Chelsea as they meet in both the Carabao Cup and the Premier League.
