First Lady At Cyberbullying Summit: Social Media 'Destructive'

ROCKVILLE, MD — First Lady Melania Trump said social media can be “destructive and harmful when used incorrectly” in prepared remarks at a cyberbullying summit in Rockville Monday morning.

Trump spoke at the Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention (FPBP) Cyberbullying Prevention Summit and promoted her “Be Best” campaign.

“Let’s face it: most children are more aware of the benefits and pitfalls of social media than some adults, but we still need to do all we can to provide them with information and tools for successful and safe online habits,” Trump said at Monday’s summit.

Trump called on technology and social media companies, schools and community groups to teach children how to “conduct themselves safely and in a positive manner in an online setting.”

The Be Best campaign focuses on issues children face today, including social media safety. Trump launched the initiative in May. In introductory remarks Monday, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar called Trump the “leader for America’s children.”

Trump did not mention her husband, whose often bellicose rhetoric and tweets sharply contrast with the first lady’s signature cause. President Trump spent the morning disparaging the special counsel investigation on Twitter, both before and after the first lady spoke at the conference.

After the conference, he tweeted: “I hope John Brennan, the worst CIA Director in our country’s history, brings a lawsuit. It will then be very easy to get all of his records, texts, emails and documents to show not only the poor job he did, but how he was involved with the Mueller Rigged Witch Hunt. He won’t sue!”

Brennan, whose security clearance was stripped in an unprecedented display of presidential pique, has threatened to sue Trump to prevent him from taking similar action against other intelligence officials.
