Mega Millions Winning Numbers For Jan. 1: $425 Million Jackpot

Tuesday, Jan. 1’s Mega Millions winning numbers are all you need to fulfill that New Year’s resolution of becoming $425 million richer. The estimated cash payout is $248.8 million. The winning numbers are 34, 44, 57, 62, 70, with a Mega Ball of 14.

Tuesday night’s Mega Millions jackpot is the eighth largest in the game’s history. It is the fifth Mega Millions drawing on the first day of a year. The jackpot has been won once in those occasions, on Jan. 1, 2008.

There was no jackpot winner in the Friday, Dec. 28 drawing, which had winning numbers of 9, 10, 25, 37 and 38 and a Mega Ball of 21. That drawing was the 20th since a record $1.537 billion jackpot was won Oct. 23. No one has come forward with that winning ticket, which was sold in South Carolina.

That doesn’t mean no one has won since then. Mega Millions has sold 12.5 million winning tickets across all the prize levels since the big one, 27 of which have been worth at least $1 million. More than a million winning tickets were sold Friday night, including a $2 million prize won in Washington. California, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania saw $1 million winners Friday night.

There were five Mega Millions jackpots won in 2018. Aside from the $1.537 billion jackpot, there was a $451 million jackpot won in Florida Jan. 5, a $533 million jackpot won in New Jersey March 30, a $142 million jackpot won in Ohio May 4 and a $543 million jackpot won in California July 24.

The odds of picking the correct numbers on five white balls and one yellow ball (the Mega Ball) are one in 302.6 million. No matter how many people play Mega Millions, the chances of winning never change. The chances of winning are based on the number combinations not the number of players buying tickets.

The Megaplier add-on, which costs an extra dollar, increases non-jackpot prizes by two to five times.

Players pick six numbers from two separate pools of numbers – five different numbers from 1 to 70 and one number from 1 to 25 (the Mega Ball number.) Players can also use an easy pick feature, where a computer selects random numbers for them. To win the jackpot, a player much match all six numbers.

Players who match some of the numbers could still win some money. Here is the payout schedule for lesser prizes, not including the Megaplier, which is different for each game:

Mega Millions tickets are $2 each and can be played in 44 states, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Lottery hopefuls had until 10:45 p.m. EST to buy tickets. The drawing is held at 11 p.m. EST in Atlanta.
