NDSU Leads WWC with 17 Wrestlers Recognized for Academic Success

Seventeen North Dakota State University wrestlers have been recognized by the Western Wrestling Conference for their academic success during the 2013-14 season, the league announced Tuesday, June 3. Six Bison were named to the WWC All-Academic Team, while 11 more claimed WWC Coaches’ Honor Roll status.

Evan Knutson, Justin LaValle, Tyler Lehmann, Steven Monk, Hunter Weber and John Gusewelle earned spots on the WWC All-Academic Team by securing a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average and being a starter or key reserve.

North Dakota State and Utah Valley led the way with six grapplers apiece on the All-Academic squad.

The 11 Bison wrestlers who claimed spots on the WWC Coaches’ Honor Roll with cumulative grade point averages above 3.0 include: Mitchell Friedman, Kyle Gliva, Jerrad Nieland, Clay Ream, Anthony Rodriguez, Nate Rykerd, Justin Scherkenbach, Connor Schlotfeldt, Cole Sladek, Joe Umlauf and Hayden Zillmer.

NDSU combined to post the most wrestlers on the two teams with 17.

NDSU was also recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) in May for appearing in the NWCA Academic Top 30 as a team for the fourth straight year. Monk and Knutson were named to the NWCA All-Academic Team as well.
