Official | Real Madrid & Lyon confirm deal for Mariano Diaz

Real Madrid have this evening confirmed the return of Spanish striker Mariano Diaz from Lyon.

The forward moves back to the Santiago Bernabéu for a fee of €30m – plus €3m in additional bonuses – just a year on from selling the 25-year-old to Lyon for a fee of €8m, but OL will only receive 65% of that amount owing to sell-on clauses.

The form Diaz found for Bruno Génésio’s side saw the Spanish forward muster 21 goals in 48 games across all competitions, sufficient for the Champions League holders to swoop for their former forward, rewarding him with a 5-year contract in the process.

The 25-year-old initially joined Real Madrid in 2012 from Badalona, rising through the club’s ranks before making his debut against Celta Vigo in the 2016/17 season- in a campaign that saw Diaz register 5 goals in the 14 appearances made under Zinedine Zidane.

Lyon are set to receive 15% from any future sale of Diaz and will now seek a replacement before the close of the transfer window on Friday. The club have been strongly linked with Celtic’s Moussa Dembele and Lille’s Nicolas Pepe.
