Punishment Martinez On Wrestling Characters Needing to Be More Relatable, Recent Title Defenses, Facing Delirious

Ring Of Honor’s, Punishment Martinez recently spoke exclusively with The Voice Of Wrestling this week about a variety of topics, including his thoughts on wrestling characters becoming more relatable. You can watch the full episode in the video player above.

Martinez spoke about his upcoming opponent, Delirious, a man who he has learned an incredible amount from prior to joining ROH.

“Well, I’ll say this, the match itself is not a title match, if he wins he gets a title match it is a proving ground match, which I think is funny that he has to prove himself against somebody who sat under his learning tree for about two years before I joined Ring Of Honor, so that’s kind of cool. I have never met anybody who is more skilled than Delirious, he is legit world traveled, but he has studied every single type of pro wrestling, he has become very well versed in every single style, which is why I sat under him.”

Martinez also went on to discuss his two title defenses so far against Hangman Page and Scorpio Sky and how each match varied.

“Everybody is different in their own way, Page was a streetfight which is right up my ally, Page is a tough dude he is the enforcer of the Bullet Club but that is kind of my match, that’s where I legit learned my craft. Then you have someone like Scorpio Sky who has been the same amount of time that I have as far as making it to a big stage, he put up a hell of a performance, but I am at a level right now where I feel like I can’t be stopped.”

The ROH star also chimed in on his thoughts regarding wrestling characters needing to become more relatable and how he fits into that.

“It has definitely become something that needs to be more relatable to people and that is in every aspect. You don’t see just certain gimmick type characters as much anymore, there might be some for comedic relief but for the most part even in the strangest characters there is still some side you can connect with like myself. I am not your average person, I am into skulls, and horror and monsters but there are people who like horror movies, it doesn’t mean I have powers, it just makes me different and people can relate to that.”
