When Stephanie McMahon first announced WWE Evolution earlier this summer, the official press releases indicated that every single women’s title in the company would be defended at the event – including the NXT UK Women’s Championship.
A problem arose in that WWE had plans to begin airing their newly recorded NXT UK television series much earlier, but talks fell through and it ended up being released on the WWE Network starting less than two weeks ago. With the women’s title not being unveiled until the second set of tapings (5-8 episodes into the series) there was just no time to build towards a defense at Evolution without spoiling future content from the show.
However, current champion Rhea Ripley has been defending the title at recent NXT live events in the United States, and actually did appear in a dark match at WWE Evolution to defend her championship against Dakota Kai.
We know that cameras were rolling, but at this point we don’t know if the match will be added to future episodes of NXT UK or if the footage will be released separately, or if WWE has other plans for the match altogether. We’ll keep you updated if more information becomes available.
