WASHINGTON, DC — President Donald Trump on Thursday said the nation will “soon find out” whether the United States will strike Iran amid mounting tensions between the two countries. His remarks come after Iran this week acknowledged it shot down a U.S. drone and days after two oil tankers were attacked in the Gulf of Oman.
Trump’s remarks were in response to shouted reporter questions about how America would respond to the drone incident. He did not answer follow-up questions about when exactly that decision would be made.
In a televised session with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trump reiterated that Iran made a mistake.
“This drone was in international waters, clearly. We had it all documented,” he said. “It’s documented scientifically, not just words.”
Trump repeated that the public will find out, but wouldn’t answer as to what that response would be or when. The president also tweeted Thursday that Iran “made a very big mistake.”
In response to the remarks, Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic House Speaker, told CNN the United States must “de-escalate” the situation.
“We have to de-escalate. That’s what we have to do. The high-tension wire are up in the region. We must de-escalate,” she said.
Trudeau, sitting beside Trump, said he too was concerned by what he called “escalation by Iran.”
“We have a significant presence in the area, including leading the NATO mission in Baghdad in Iraq,” he said. “We look forward to discussing with our closest ally.”
