Leeds intend to activate €5.5m option to purchase Illan Meslier

L’Équipe report that Championship side Leeds United have the intention of activating the €5.5m option in their loan arrangement with Ligue 2 side FC Lorient to purchase French youth international goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

The 20-year-old has convinced the Leeds board of his talent, having joined initially last August to provide cover for Kiko Casilla. Meslier has been thrown into action recently after the ex-Real Madrid goalkeeper was handed an 8-match ban for racially abusing Charlton attacker Jonathan Leko.

The path ahead is somewhat murky, owing to the fact that it is not currently clear if this Championship season will be completed owing to COVID-19 and what the ramifications might be if the campaign is not fully finished. But should Leeds win promotion to the Premier League, then they will almost certainly sign Meslier permanently.

Meslier’s entourage confirmed to the newspaper that the player feels great at Leeds United in “a very good atmosphere” with a “very competent staff.”
